plexiglass and acrylic are the same family of plastic: PMMA. Plexiglass is a trade name that became the common word. It is not a different material, and it is not glass. The useful distinction is not the nickname. It is cast versus extruded, and acrylic versus polycarbonate.

Key takeaways

Acrylic is the material: poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA.

Plexiglass (also written Plexiglas) is a brand name for acrylic sheet that people use as a generic word.

Perspex and Lucite are other acrylic trade names. They are not different plastics.

A sheet sold as “plexiglass” can still be cast or extruded. The nickname does not say which.

Plexiglass is not Lexan. Plexiglas is the branded form buyers meet on mill sheets. Plexiglass is the common English spelling in emails and search. Treat them as the same request until the sender says otherwise, then confirm the polymer.

Why it is not glass

The “glass” in the nickname is historical. Acrylic was sold as a lighter, shatter-resistant alternative for glazing. The material is still a plastic. It can be polished to a clear face. It is not silica glass, it does not have a glass-hard surface, and a case made from it is an acrylic fabrication, not a glazed window.

Calling it plexiglass on a purchase order does not make the breakage behavior, the scratch behavior, or the weight into glass. Those stay PMMA behaviors, and they still depend on grade and thickness.

Why it is not polycarbonate

The mix-up that causes real orders to go wrong is plexiglass versus Lexan, or “plexiglass” versus polycarbonate. Both can be clear sheet. They are different polymers.

Acrylic (plexiglass in common speech) is the usual choice for a brand-facing display: cubes, trays, polished edges.

Polycarbonate is the usual choice when the part may be hit.

Fabrication does not transfer. Solvent bonding and edge polish that are normal on cast acrylic are not a default on polycarbonate.

If the email says “plexiglass or Lexan, whichever is cheaper,” stop and split the brief. Cheaper here is often a different material, not a discount.

What the nickname leaves out

Two sheets both called plexiglass can be cast or extruded. That difference is the one a display buyer feels: edge polish, solvent joints, thickness tolerance, and price. The nickname does not record it.

ISO 7823-1 covers cast PMMA sheet. ISO 7823-2 covers extruded PMMA sheet. Citing either standard still requires the seller to say which sheet this order uses. “Plexiglass to ISO 7823” without a part number is incomplete.

What to write instead

On the RFQ and the drawing, replace the nickname with four fields:

Polymer: PMMA / acrylic.

Route: cast or extruded.

Thickness by member, and colorless or tint.

Edge finish and joint method, if the part is a case or a stand.

You can add “also called plexiglass” in the email so a buyer and a factory are talking about the same thing. Do not leave it as the only material line.

Sanait builds custom acrylic displays, boxes, and trays — PMMA, in the sense above. A brief that says only “plexiglass” will be read as acrylic unless you say polycarbonate. Intake is on the FAQ.
