Cost guide
      Cast acrylic

By David Deng · R&D manager, Sanait · Updated October 2026

Cast acrylic usually costs more than extruded acrylic because the sheet is made differently, and because the parts that need cast also need more stations after the sheet. The premium is not a quality medal. It is the price of a route that polishes and solvent-bonds cleanly. If the part does not need that route, you are paying for a sheet you will not use.

Key takeaways

Cast sheet itself is generally more expensive to produce than extruded sheet of the same nominal thickness.

Parts specified as cast are usually also polished and bonded. Those stations, not the word “cast,” are often the larger line.

There is no honest public percentage. Mill, thickness, tint, and quantity move the gap.

A cheaper quote that switched to extruded is a different part, not a discount.

Paying for cast on a hidden back or a simple bend is how buyers overpay.

Cast is not a UV grade, a food grade, or a brand. Those are separate lines.

On this page

The short answer

Why the sheet costs more

Why the part costs more

What actually moves the gap

Where the premium is wasted

How to compare two quotes

FAQ

Sources

The short answer

Working answer. Cast costs more for two stacked reasons: the sheet is a slower, batch process, and the jobs that specify cast usually add polish and solvent joints. Pay the premium when an edge or a joint faces the customer. Do not pay it because the email said “better acrylic.”

Why the sheet costs more

Cell-cast acrylic is poured between plates and cured. That is the process ISO 7823-1 describes. It is a batch. Plate, pour, cure, separate. Extruded acrylic is pushed continuously through a die — ISO 7823-2. Continuous production is generally the cheaper way to make a thin, consistent sheet.

That process difference is why a cast blank usually enters the factory at a higher sheet price than an extruded blank of the same nominal thickness and tint. It is not because cast is a luxury brand. A named mill can sit on top of either route and move the price again.

Thickness works in the same direction on both routes: more plastic, more money. A thick cast plinth is expensive because it is thick and cast, not because of a single “cast multiplier.”

Why the part costs more

Buyers rarely buy cast sheet and stop. They buy it because:

The edge will be polished, and cast polishes more cleanly than extruded.

The joint will be solvent-bonded and meant to disappear. Cast-to-cast is the normal clear joint on a display box.

The face is thick, or optical, or both.

Each of those is a station: programming, a crew, a reject risk. Blush on a joint is scrap. A polish that does not match the sample is scrap. Scrap is in the price whether or not it is a line on the quote.

So a “cast cube” price is sheet plus stations. Comparing it with an extruded holder that was only laser-cut is comparing two different factories of work. The route gap and the station gap are both real. Only one of them is the sheet.

What actually moves the gap

What widens or narrows the cast premium — no percentages

Factor

Effect on the gap

Thickness

Thicker cast uses more of the expensive blank. Generic clear is the fair comparison.

Polish and joints

Often larger than the sheet gap on a small cube. An extruded part with no polish is not the same job.

Quantity

Sheet route is per piece. Scrap is not free on the cheaper sheet.

Anyone who quotes “cast is X percent more” without thickness, mill, and the station list is guessing. A gap before they match is a different product. The edge and the joint decide, not the adjective.

Does a higher price mean it will not yellow?

No. Yellowing is grade and exposure. Specify UV performance separately if the face is in sun.

Can I mix cast and extruded to save money?

Yes, if you assign them: cast on show faces and joints, extruded on hidden members. Write it on the drawing so the saving is real and the look is agreed.

Is a cheap “cast” quote a warning?

Ask what cast means on that quote: which mill, which members, whether joints are included.
