Acrylic vs glass

By David Deng · R&D manager, Sanait · Updated October 2026

For a custom display case that will be fabricated, shipped, and moved, acrylic is usually the practical sheet. For a fixed vitrine where a harder face and a glass look matter more than weight, glass is still the right call. The split is fabrication and handling versus surface hardness. Neither material is “stronger” in the abstract, and a brochure multiplier is not a specification.

Key takeaways

Choose acrylic when the case is custom, shipped, or handled: cubes, counter boxes, traveling vitrines.

Choose glass when the face must stay harder under daily wiping, and the case is fixed and can take the weight.

Acrylic is lighter and less likely to shatter. It scratches more readily than glass.

Glass is harder and often preferred in permanent museum-style cases. It is heavier and breaks into sharp pieces.

Do not quote a single “times stronger” or weight ratio without the grade, thickness, and test.

A clear case is not a UV filter unless the sheet or the glass is specified as filtering.

On this page

The short answer

What you are comparing

Side-by-side for cases

Which one for which case

Look, scratch, and cleaning

Breakage and handling

What to write on the brief

FAQ

Sources

The short answer

Decision rule. If the case will be made to a drawing, bonded or fastened, and then shipped or moved between stores, start with acrylic. If the case is a fixed cabinet and the priority is a hard face that resists wiping, start with glass. If you need both a traveling case and a glass-hard face, say which failure you can live with.

“Plexiglass” is an acrylic trade name, not a kind of glass. Putting it on a drawing without saying PMMA leaves the material open.

What you are comparing

Acrylic is poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, bought as cast or extruded sheet. Display cases are cut, polished, and often solvent-bonded or assembled with hardware. ISO 7823 covers PMMA sheet. It does not cover a finished cube.

Glass in this comparison means flat glazing used in vitrines — ordinary float glass, or a safety glass if the brief requires it. It is a different material family. Edge work, thickness, and whether it is tempered or laminated are specifications, not defaults.

A display factory that fabricates acrylic should not be assumed to glaze a glass cabinet. Say which material you want in the first email.

Side-by-side for cases

The table is directional. Acrylic if you cannot accept glass weight or glass breakage in that location.

Acrylic cases in the first card are the usual retail build: boxes, related trays, and display stands.

Look, scratch, and cleaning

Side by side, a good acrylic face and a glass face both read as clear. The differences buyers notice later are scratches and the edge. Acrylic marks under grit and under a dry wipe. Glass marks less. An acrylic edge can be polished until it disappears into the face; a glass edge is a different fabrication.

Cleaning follows the material. Alcohol and some solvents can craze a stressed acrylic face. Abrasive pads haze both, faster on acrylic. Write the cleaner into the brief if staff will wipe the case daily. “Glass cleaner” is not automatically safe for acrylic.

Breakage and handling

Ordinary glass fails as sharp fragments. That is why a public or a shipping brief often moves to acrylic, or to a safety glass if glass is required. Acrylic fails more often as a crack or a chip. A chipped cube corner is a pack and a handling problem as much as a material problem.

Tempered or laminated glass changes the failure. If the case must be glass and must not shard, name the safety build. Do not assume “glass” means tempered.

What to write on the brief

Acrylic (PMMA) or glass — and if glass, ordinary, tempered, or laminated.

Whether the case ships, stays fixed, or both.

Whether the public touches the face daily.

Whether the object inside needs a UV-filtering specification.
